This report was commissioned by the UIC Panel of Structural Experts Group
(PoSe) to provide up to date knowledge on repair works in operational tunnels.

The main types of repair works are described in UIC leaflet 779-10 §5, “Carrying
out the work”.

The present study is based on a survey of the current practices of several
European railway infrastructure managers. The objective is to identify the most
frequently employed methods of repair, the conditions in which they are carried
out, and the appropriate safety measures associated with such works.

The tunnel assets of most of the European networks are old, mostly constructed
over a century ago. Tunnel structures inevitably degrade with time. Repair works
must be carried out in a reliable and safe manner in order to ensure serviceability.

The survey shows that infrastructure managers in different countries have
developed specific repair techniques based on the characteristics of local tunnel
assets. These specific methods - and the conditions required to carry out the
various repair works - are presented in this report.
