A wheel slide protection system (WSP system) is designed to make the best use of available adhesion and improve adhesion in all operating conditions through a controlled reduction and restoration of the braking force to prevent wheelsets from locking and sliding in an uncontrolled manner due to low adhesion. Thus the stopping distance on degraged adhesion is optimized and the occurrence of wheelset damage is minimized.

A wheel rotation monitoring system (WRM system) is designed to detect locked wheels and provide instant notification of such occurrences.

Trains fitted with WSP / WRM systems may consist of single vehicles, tractive and trailing vehicles or may be high speed trains, multiple units or commuter trains operating on any track gauge.

Such vehicles are equipped with pneumatic friction brakes and may also be equipped with additional braking systems, e.g. dynamic brakes and wheel / rail adhesion-independent brakes, and may also be fitted with adhesion enhancement systems, e.g. sanding.

Vehicles fitted and tested with WSP in accordance with the present leaflet are deemed to have adequate means to cope with low wheel / rail adhesion.

Each manufacturer of WSP / WRM systems is responsible for taking every necessary step to make sure that the quality of workmanship and manufacture meets the requirements of proper engineering practice.
